Renowned Pakistani philosopher, intellectual, writer and journalist Syed Muhammad Taqi (1917-1999) is considered the first modern philosopher of the East to expound a fully consistent and coherent view of the universe. His magnum opus, Taarikh aur Kainaat—Mera Nazariya (1974) covers major aspects of the human philosophical quest. His other major works include Mantiq, Falsafa aur Science (1970); Rooh aur Falsafa (1962); Hindustan: Pasmanzar Peshmanzar (2002); and Nahjul Balagha ka Tasawwar–e-Aluuuiyat (1977). Essays in Philosophy (1981) is a collection of his celebrated articles in Urdu that were translated into English. His translation of the biblical Das Kapital earned him worldwide acclaim. Among his famous translations into Urdu were John Dewey’s Democracy and Education; Alfred North Whitehead’s The Aims of Education; and Sir James Jeans’ The Mysterious Universe.

About the Translator

Sumera Naqvi has worked in the media industry, mainly print, for almost 35 years. She began her career with The News International in 1991 and was part of its launch team. In 1994, she joined the English daily Dawn and wrote innumerable articles, features, investigative reports and book reviews for all the magazines, including the Herald. She reviewed plays performed by the National Academy of Performing Arts and commercial and activist theatre groups.
